What To Do If Your Dog Has a Tick In His Skin

Your dog probably loves being outside as much as you do. It is a great feeling to go hiking around with your dog; perhaps you like to walk through the woods. You might like to take your dog on picnics in beautiful fields. No matter where you venture, while you and your dog are enjoying the day, a very little creature may try to be ruining it.

A dog can very easily have a tick attached to him. The tick may enter on any area of the dog, not just the tummy where there is no fur. Although a tick is very small, he has the strength to work his way under your dog's fur and into his skin. You should always check your dog for ticks after coming in from any area where there is a chance there were ticks. If you do find one, it will be up to you to save your dog from what may be a possible infection and at worst, Lyme disease.

You will want to push aside the fur that is around the tick. You may even wish to trim it so that you can get a very good angle at which to approach and remove the tick. Trick about ticks, is that many people can easily remove the head; but the body remains. This is what can cause major problems for your dog. You will want to take a good pair of tweezers and very carefully pull the tick out in one smooth motion. If you squeeze the tweezers too hard, the tick's head will come off and the body will stay inside your dog's skin.

If you are not sure if you have gotten the entire tick out from your dog, you must bring him to the vet as soon as possible. Do not wait. The body of the tick can cause a very bad infection.

To prevent ticks from attaching to your dog, you do not need to avoid the great outdoors. There are many products available that will help protect your dog. These products usually perform more than one action, such as a flea and tick prevention collar.
