What is Acne?

Acne is caused by a blockage of the oil gland that lubricates the skin, this blockage then causes bacteria to build up underneath the skin and we see a red swelling, this is commonly called a "pimple" or a "zit" sometimes we may see a "white head" which is a pimple with the whitish puss bacteria more visible through the skin, we also have the "black head" which is usually more flush with the skin and has a darkish oily batch of skin tissue mixed in with it.

The areas of the body that secrete the most oil are the face the neck the back and the chest. It may be very tempting to "Pop" or "squeeze" a pimple but this can only make things worse as it will damage the skin tissue and leave a scar, such as a "pit" or a "hard upraised" area.

Poor hygiene is not linked to the cause or continuation of acne but good cleanliness is a factor in the control of the condition, washing your face continually will make no difference with the condition and may cause dry skin.

It is also believed that there is a genetic link to the development of acne in the body. Teenage boys and girls seem to acquire acne more than the general population, it is well documented that hormonal changes are causes of higher levels of oil secretions of the glands due to natural secretions of steroids during puberty.

Sometimes stress may cause outbreaks of acne; therefore it is helpful to take care of yourself both physically and mentally.

The acne usually starts at the onset of puberty and continues sometimes into the mid 20's Once it was believed that diet played an important part in the prevention or control of acne but there is actually no documented proof, however it is recommended that you do indulge in a balanced diet.

There are many types of acne treatments available today such as topical medicines, which are applied directly to the skin.

In cases of severe acne it is always best to consult a physician.
