Treatment Options For Crohn\’s Disease In Children
Here\'s the situation. Your child or teenager constantly runs to the bathroom. They have persistent diarrhea and a perpetual stomach ache. They are plagued by extreme fatigue. They experience chills and fevers more than the average child. What\'s going on? What do these symptoms mean? It could mean that your child suffers from Crohn\'s disease. Crohn\'s disease in children can be frightening for many parents, but shouldnt be because it can be managed if you are armed with the right information.
What exactly is Crohns disease? It is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The inflammation can cause extreme abdominal pain, diarrhea, malabsorption, malnutrition and even stunted growth in children. These symptoms can be devastating unless you engage in a Crohns disease treatment plan.
Crohns disease in children can be treated in three major ways which include: medications, surgery, and nutritional therapy. Lets look at the each treatment option in detail.
Treatment Option #1: Medications. You have to be extremely careful with medication in children under the age of 18, especially under the age of 12. You should never give your child any of your medications as they can be very harmful to your child and even cause death.
Crohns disease in children can be alleviated by medications such as 5-aminosalicyclic acid and corticosteroids. Examples of 5-aminosalicylclic acids include Sulfasalzine and Balsalazide. These medications reduce inflammation and pain. Examples of corticosteroids include Prednisone and Entocort EC. The purpose of corticosteroids is to reduce inflammation. Prednisone can have many side effects though.
Your Pediatrician will instruct you on the best medication for your child. They will give you the appropriate dosage for your childs age. Make sure to ask questions if you have any concerns about the medication.
Treatment Option #2: Surgery. Surgery is normally reserved for children that have an exceptionally severe form of Crohns disease. Surgery does not provide a cure, but can be much more effective than or at least complement medicines. Surgery does enable your child to grow correctly, if they have experienced growth failure.
Treatment Option #3: Nutritional therapy. When your child suffers from Crohns disease they may not absorb all the nutrients their body needs to grow. You need to watch their diet to avoid malnutrition. A great complement to a healthy diet is a nutritional supplement drink such as Ensure. You can also try various diets to make sure that your child doesnt have food sensitivities. For example, they may be allergic to dairy and intolerant of gluten. Discuss possible diets with your pediatrician and dietician.
If your child does have Crohns disease then try to learn everything you can about the disease. The more you know, the less scared you will feel. You can find support groups in your local area or online. You can find other children that have dealt with it for a longer period of time. They can provide the guidance and support your child may need. As a parent, you need to stay strong and monitor you childs health closely. If you have any questions consult your pediatrician.
