Abuse in a relationship is one of top reasons couples divorce. When you make that vow, when you make that commitment, you hope in your heart that this will be it. This person often times then feels guilty and apologizes and often buys gifts. Sometimes even promising change and apologizing for their behavior. They then enter into the \"honeymoon\" phase where things get back to normal, only to have it happen again in the future. Being in this sort of relationship often has one partner \"walking on eggshells\" and not wanting to do anything to upset the abuser.

This cycle not only goes for physical abuse, but for verbal abuse. A partner that makes inappropriate comments to his or her partner on his or her appearance, doles out put downs or name calling is usually seen as verbal abuse. Unfound accusations or constant verbal battery also constitute verbal abuse. Many times verbal abuse follows the cycle of abuse pattern. And as we discussed earlier, if it is not taken care of it can go on for years.
