The Quit Smoking Contest
A great motivator to quit smoking is to quit with a group of friends. That's actually how I did it. Me and a bunch of my buddies hosted a quit smoking contest amongst ourselves and a few networked friends. On average each person in the contest (there were 7 people) smoked 1 pack a day. So everyday, each person would put the cost of a pack of cigarettes (at the time it was about $5) into the pot. Let me tell you after about three months, when the pot grew to $3150, we started to get pretty excited.
We had all determined at the beginning that the contest would last 1 year. So each guy, within a years time, would forfeit $1825 into the pot. At the end of the year, the last non-smoker standing gets the winnings. If there's more than one non-smoker, the winnings were divided. Also, there were no second chances. If you slipped up just once, you were out.
That's a lot of extra dough for anyone that made it through.
With that kind of light at the end of the tunnel, only 1 person out of 7 dropped out. That gave an extra $100+ dollars to each remaining member. The guy who dropped out gave up around the 140th day - outch! Everyone got back $1925 bucks. Made for a nice new year.
The rest of the guys were nice enough though. No one gloated too hard about keeping the loser's hard earned money. I recommend trying such a contest with some of your smoking friends. It makes the whole thing less stressful because you all start getting excited about what you'll do with the winnings.
Obviously it's a lot more fun when you do it with a ton of people. When you see the pot grow to such large numbers, you can't help but daydream.
The best part is that anyone who quits wins. They have a load of saved money that they can blow on whatever they want AND they're a non-smoker. It's a pretty sweet deal.
