Do I Have Crohn\’s Disease?
In American there are at least half a million people who have Crohn\'s disease. This is quite a large number, and many people may be wondering if they have the disease as well. Believe it or not, this is a disease that usually hits people when they are young; many times between the ages of 15-35 and if you have family members that have it you are at a greater risk as well. Finding out that you have Crohn\'s disease early is important so the proper treatment can be used to help deal with the problem. So, do you have Crohn\'s disease? Well, in order to figure this out you need to understand what the disease is, the symptoms of the disease, and the available treatments for Crohn\'s disease.
What is Crohn\'s Disease?
First of all you need to understand what Crohn\'s disease is. Crohn\'s disease is an inflammatory disease of the bowel, and usually it leads to recurring inflammation of the digestive tract. The lining of the digestive tract ends up getting inflamed, which can lead to bleeding that causes diarrhea and other problems. This disease can actually occur almost anywhere throughout the digestive tract, and sadly there is no cure yet found for the disease. Although there is no cure, there are a variety of different treatments that can be used to alleviate the symptoms and lead to periods of remission.
Symptoms of Crohn\'s Disease
There are a variety of signs and symptoms that are related to having Crohn\'s disease. It is important that you know and understand these symptoms so that you can be aware of whether or not you have having this problem. The following are a few of the most common symptoms that are associated with having Crohn\'s disease.
1. Cramping and Pain of the Abdomen - One of the most common symptoms of Crohn\'s disease is having both cramping and pain in your abdomen. The inflammation in the digestive tract can cause swelling and even scar tissue that can lead to quite a bit of cramping and pain. While with moderate forms of this disease the cramping and pain may only be a bit bothersome, for those who have severe cases, the pain can be extremely bad and can come with vomiting and nausea as well.
2. Bouts of Diarrhea - Another of the most common symptoms that comes along with Crohn\'s disease is bouts of diarrhea. The inflammation of this disease ends up causing all the cells to secrete more salt and water, which can lead to bouts of diarrhea. Those who only have a mild case may have occasional diarrhea or some lose stools; however, people with a severe case may end up having diarrhea all day long, which can be bothersome and even debilitating.
3. Bloody Stools - Blood stools can also be a symptom of Crohn\'s disease. Due to the inflammation throughout the digestive tract, just regular food going through can irritate the lining and cause it to start bleeding, which results in blood in the stool. You may see very bright fresh blood, or you may see darker older blood in your stools as well.
4. Weight Loss - Losing weight is another symptom of this disease. Often the pain and the intestinal discomfort leads to a smaller appetite, which can result in weight loss. People with this disease may not be able to digest the food as they should either, which can also lead to weight loss.
Treatments for Crohn\'s Disease
Thankfully, although there is still no cure for Crohn\'s disease, there are a variety of treatments that can be very helpful. The first type of treatment that will probably be used is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. These drugs aid in getting rid of some of the inflammation that is causing many of the symptoms. They can help to deal with the pain associated with Crohn\'s disease as well. Immune system suppressors are also used and they actually suppress the way the immune system acts and they help to get rid of the inflammation in this way as well. Some doctors may also prescribe antibiotics as well, which can help to heal the abscesses and fistulas that can occur with the disease. In rare and sever cases, surgery may actually be used to get rid of portions of the digestive tract that are much damaged.
