Discover The Symptoms and Remedies for Distention (Distension) and Abdominal Bloating

Distention, Distension and Bloating -

The terms distention, distension and bloating are often used interchangeably and you will frequently see them used in some combination of the following:

  • abdominal bloating
  • stomach distention
  • abdominal distention
  • belly bloating
  • abdominal bloating upper
  • bloating severe stomach
  • abdominal bloating severe
  • abdominal bloating lower
  • abdominal bloating pain
  • abdominal distension
  • stomach bloating
  • bloating stomach
Health care professionals tend to make a distinction between bloating and distension, or distention feeling that the term bloating is appropriate when the typical individual is more intuitively describing what they feel when their abdomen feels full and tight.

Use of the term(s) distension (or, distention), is more accurate for describing the actual increase in the distance around a person's body, or girth.

Used in this manner, the terms may describe symptoms whose root cause may or may not be the same or even related.

In the general sense abdominal bloating (belly bloating, bloating stomach, etc.) is a condition in which the abdomen feels full and tight and this feeling is usually caused by gas in the bowel which can be created by any of the following:

  • air swallowing (which is a nervous habit)
  • overeating
  • constipation
  • lactose intolerance and other food intoerances
  • small bowel bacterial overgrowth
  • partial bowel obstruction
  • irritable bowel syndrome.
Another important but uncommon cause of abdominal bloating is the abnormal accumulation of serous fluid (blood serum) in the abdominal cavity. Also, tumors, such as those arising from ovarian cancer can cause bloating.

The symptom of bloating is extremely common and is prevalent in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), although bloating is not a reliable indicator of IBS.

Bloating is more prevalent in women than men, tending to become worse during the course of the day and after the consumption of food. Relief is sometimes experienced after the passing of gas, or after a bowel movement.

Many women with IBS report that the severity of their bloating seems to be related to their menstrual cycle.

Also, women who are on Hormone Replacement Therapy and are experiencing bloating may be ingesting too much estrogen and may want to talk to their doctor about reducing the dosage.

The main stream therapeutic approach to treating bloating focuses on reducing the volume of intestinal gas, increasing intestinal gas elimination or reducing its production. Some promising results have been obtained by the use of prokinetics, such as tegaserod and Prostigmine, and by the use of nonabsorbable antibiotics, such as rifaximin.

Another therapeutic approach is the administration of probiotics to modify the composition of colonic flora and thus the production of intestinal gas.

Many have found acupuncture to be very helpful for abdominal bloating, distention, (distension), belly bloating and bloating stomach, although traditional acupuncture treatment usually involves a number of sessions over an extended period of time, such as twelve weeks.

For those who use acupuncture as a viable, complimentary medical therapy, many are discovering that research involving acupuncture and very small amounts of energy has resulted in the development of small hand held devices called Energy Point Stimulators (EPS). These devices are extremely effective, can be used in the comfort and safety of the home, and allow one to enjoy the benefits of acupuncture without the use of dangerous and invasive needles.
