Dental Products - Teeth Whiteners

There are plenty of dental products available for the consumer to whiten teeth. We hear about teeth whiteners as if they were a common staple for any household. Who doesnt want a whiter smile? With increased intakes of gourmet coffees and teas, its no wonder teeth are become discolored and dull.

As the media bombards us with lots of products to whiten dental teeth, we need to be mindful of their effectiveness and use. Here are some of the types of whitening products available for consumer use.

During the 1980s, bleach alternatives were only available through the dentist. This involved a power bleaching procedure that would utilize high levels of hydrogen peroxide. Today, the practice still continues and it sometimes uses hydrogen peroxide levels as high as 40%. The level of peroxide should keep the whitened teeth going for 3-5 years. To get a power bleach procedure, visit a dentist for consultation.

Toothpaste teeth whiteners are readily available through the convenience of the local drug store or supermarket. They can be found on shelves for anyone to use. But are they effective? Toothpaste whiteners may work to some degree. However, they do not have the same effectiveness as professional products. They are made of generally of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Its important to understand that peroxide may make your teeth white, but it can also pose problems. Peroxide can affect your gum tissues and, ultimately, damage dental nerve cells. As a consequence, theres an increase in tooth sensitivity to hot and cold items. Just imagine what it would be like to eat ice cream.

Another home remedy for teeth whitening is through a home bleach kit. These kits provide a solution for the teeth, along with a tray. Most of them require that you soak your teeth for a number of minutes. Although its not effective as the professional power-bleaching alternative, the home kit is more effective than the over-the-counter toothpaste whiteners.

The dentist can prescribe home whitening kits. As long as the dentist doesnt see a threat to your dental health, he or she can prescribe a powerful home kit for your needs.

There could be some side effects of home kits. Because the home kits require that you to dry overnight, saliva from the mouth could cause blotching of the teeth. Even with alcohol to dry the teeth, bleach sometimes doesnt work as well. Make sure that you read the directions carefully.

Whitening strips are becoming more popular today because of its simplicity and cost. A user merely needs to apply the dental strip at night. These strips are available over the counter, so anyone can purchase whitening strips. However, you need to be cautious about the effectiveness. The strips are flat. Because teeth are not technically flat, the effectiveness of the strips may not reach all parts of the upper and lower teeth.

The wide selections of teeth whitening procedures have allowed consumers to easily get dental treatments at the right price. By careful understanding of the products available, you can further ensure a whiter smile.
