Non-Skid Dog Bowl

Tag: Dog Health

WEIGH IT DOWN\r

  • Find a metal ring, enamel plate or other heavy circular item
  • This weight must not be breakable
  • The diameter should be no wider than the bowl at its widest point
  • \r

    GLUE IT

    • Use a type of glue that will adhere to both surfaces to be joined together
    • Possibilities include contact cement, epoxies, and Goop
    • Follow the manufacturer\’s instructions
    • Be sure to allow yourself adequate ventilation!
    • \r

      TRY IT

      • When dry, try the bowl out and see how well your dog does
      • Add more weight if necessary
      • You can also add additional materials per below
      • \r

        ADD FRICTION MATERIALS

        • Use shelf lining cloth or rubber material from an old mat
        • Cut it out so it matches the circumference of the weight
        • Glue the friction material to the bottom of the weight
        • \r

OTHER IDEAS TO MAKE NON-SKID DOG FEEDING BOWLS

          • One possibility would be to build a wooden box to place the bowl in and then attach that to a cupboard or wood framing in an out-of-the-way corner
          • Or scour the thrift stores and yard sales for a very heavy metal pan. Clean well. Apply friction materials to the bottom and let dry
          • If your dog can be fed outside year round or even part of the year, use heavy dirt to anchor the bowl in place. Wipe it clean with water and a rag when your dog is done so food doesn\’t cake on the surface
          • Consider building a small cement trough with a slight slope and a drain plug so it can be hosed out to clean it. You could even build two compartments, one for eating and the other for drinking
          • \r

Which Dog Breed is Best for You?

            Tag: Dog Health

Dogs come in all sizes. Each dog breed has certain inherent traits. That is NOT to say that every dog of the same breed will be exactly the same. Dogs do not come off of an assembly line identical in every way to the one before them and the one after them. Each dog is a living, breathing animal that is completely unique INSIDE, even though he may look pretty much like other dogs of the same breed OUTSIDE. Still, you can tell a lot about a dog by his breed.

Some dogs are high energy and constantly in motion. These kinds of dogs are excellent choices as pets for people who are high energy and constantly in motion, but they would be an extremely poor choice as a pet for a little old lady in her 80s.

Families with small children should not ever consider acquiring a family dog that is short-tempered. Families that enjoy outdoor recreation shouldn\’t consider getting a family dog that would rather lie in front of a nice warm fire than go outside play in the snow. Families that would rather stay in out of the cold shouldn\’t choose a dog that thrives on playing outdoors in cold weather.

Okay, you get the picture. You should choose a family dog that is a close match personality-wise to your family, and you should choose a family dog that has a temperament that is suitable for what his living situation will be when he joins your family. Breed does matter, but what is even more important is how the puppy relates to his/her mother and to his/her litter mates.

Stand back and watch puppies and their mother. Note that there is always a \”pecking order\” in the litter. The mother dog will have to constantly correct the little rogue of the litter and console the crybaby. Some puppies play together well, while others lose their temper quickly and a game can get violent in a hurry.

Choose a breed, but then choose the puppy from the litter that will be the best \”fit\” for your family.

Tips To Help Pick the Perfect Dog Trainer

            Tag: Dog Health

Many dog owners don\’t have the patience, time or energy to devote to properly training their dog or new puppy. For some, the best solution is to outsource the effort to a professional dog trainer.

As with any professional service the costs and quality can vary greatly. Like many professions-especially those that involve human-animal interactions - training philosophies can vary as well. Below we have some tips to help you weigh your options and pick the right dog trainer for you and your needs.

Tip 1: Budget - First start by looking over your budget to help determine your needs and what you can afford. Depending on your location, dog training can run anywhere from free to $100 or more per session. For free sessions consider volunteers, parks and shelters. What constitutes a reasonable fee will be a personal preference and most likely depend on the trainer\’s experience, length of the program, your goals and your geographic location.

Tip 2: Schedule - some training programs are weekly and others may be more frequent. Most programs allow you to be involved in the training session - some programs are offered at your home and others are offered at a training facility. Many dog trainers suggest you allot time daily to train your dog, whether at home or at the training facility.

Tip 3: Commitment - Dogs, especially early training need constant, regular blocks of time and attention in order to achieve your training goals. Setting aside n a hour a day is typical when first training your dog.

Many dog owners prefer \”boot camp\” training sessions. In this scenario the dog goes away to a special facility for several weeks. The training is regular, intensive and long. Some owners may find this extreme but don\’t fret - your dog will enjoy it. Toward the end of the session term the owners are usually asked to participate so the owner can begin \’transferring\” the obedience to you, the dog owner.

Dog training results are often amazing and leave both dog and owners equally happy! Dogs who graduate are discipline and eager to please their owner. Yet, paradoxically, these dogs show no signs of being repressed. They\’re happy and play with great enthusiasm.

            To Recap:

Examine your goals. You may want your dog trained for entering dog shows or you simply want him to stop chewing the furniture. In both cases training is necessary but will most likely be different in nature.

Some dogs are fearful while some are too assertive - the training you pick will depend on what attributes they have that you want to shape and mold.

No matter your goals or budget, find a dog trainer who exhibits massive patients and boundless energy who also displays a deep love for dogs. Beyond these basics, you will want a trainer whose philosophy makes sense to you and matches your goals.

If you are unsure where to start - ask friends, co-workers and family members if they have a dog trainer they could recommend. It may make the whole process that much easier for you.

The Easy Way To Train Your Dog Using The Most Effective Techniques

            Tag: Dog Health

Whether you are the happy owner of a new dog or have had your pooch for many years now, it\’s never too late to start a training program. Implementing a dog training problem is the best way to make your pup the best behaved dog on the block and strengthen the bond between the two of you.

Who\’s the best person to train your dog? You guessed it - You are! Not only will your dog respond better to it\’s owner, but your relationship will improve because of it.

One of the most common questions we receive is from people wondering what types of dog training they should use. We thought we would go over this quickly to help you decide what path to take.

Obedience dog training is probably the most widely known. This involves instructing you dog to carry out specific activities and commands. Some of these commands are the classic ones we have all heard such as \”sit, stay and heel\”.

This type of training is a good way to train your dog to act in a specific way on command. It\’s a great feeling saying a command and watching your dog follow directions. It feels good to be listened to!

I included a link at the bottom of this article that you can use to learn about specific dog training programs that have been proven to work. They actually combine dog obedience training along with the next form of training we are going to look at quickly - dog behavior training.

With behavior training, you are teaching you dog how to behave in everyday situations. You are shaping their behavior in the situations where you don\’t want to have to launch commands at them.

Potty training is a perfect example of this type of dog training. Your dog learns not to \”do their business\” in the house - they are learning this behavior and applying it to their everyday life. Teaching your dog when not to bark is another example of something people work on using behavior training.

A common mistake I see is people relying too much on one style of dog training. You want to mix it up in order to make sure you are covering all the bases.

Training your dog can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Your best bet is use a program that incorporates both obedience and behavior training so that you get the most out of your efforts and train your pooch to be the \”good boy\” (or girl!) you want it to be.

Click Here to get an \”at-home\” dog training program that will cut your dog training time in half!

It\’s a quick and easy Dog Behaviour Training program that has been given the \”editor\’s choice\” for top dog training program.

Senior Dog Issues - Making The Most Of Your Dog\’s Golden Years

            Tag: Dog Health

Senior dog health issues in many ways reflect those of their human counterparts. There is no exact way to determine when a dog becomes a senior. Dogs are individual in the way they age and the issues the senior dog has are individual as well. Regularly assess your dog to make sure its appearance and behavior are normal. Your senior dog\’s health issues can be addressed with a little \”TLC\”. Dogs less than 20 pounds might not show signs of senior dog issues until about 12. A larger dog may begin to show signs of senior dog issues around 8-10 years of age. Senior dog health issues often involve the senior dog being less able to resist infections and other diseases, and its organs becoming less efficient.

Dogs are living longer, increasing the likelihood of senior dog health issues not previously encountered. With the right care, love and support, it is not uncommon for our four-legged family members to live to 14 or 15 and even more. In general, mixed breeds and smaller dogs tend to live longer.

As with people, reaching senior age means encountering senior dog issues.

Your dog will start to slow down and lose stamina, and may require a new diet and exercise plan to stay at the right weight and optimum health. Body composition regarding amount of muscle and fat tissue tends to change in senior dogs, and they may therefore need up to 20% fewer calories. Obesity can be one of the senior dog health issues that need to be addressed due to the dog being less active and therefore burning fewer calories.

Care must be taken in exercising older dogs.

Check your dog\’s weight by feeling the ribs with the flat of your palm. If it\’s hard for you to feel the ribs, your dog needs to lose weight. You can help with weight loss by feeding a calorie-controlled diet and possibly by giving more exercise.

If the ribs feel very prominent or you can easily see the ribs on a short-haired dog, it needs to gain some weight. Have your veterinarian check for any underlying health issues affecting your senior dog causing the weight loss. It is possible that there is a loss of appetite because smell and taste lose their edge, or the digestive tract becomes less efficient. You may need to feed a very good-tasting, highly-digestible diet. Feed small meals, often — divide the day\’s food into two to four small meals.

Warm your dog\’s food gently to body temperature. Leave the food down for about 10-15 minutes, and then remove it. Your senior dog is more apt to eat fresh food. And, there\’s no question, it\’s so much better for them.

As with people, senior dog health issues involve susceptibility to many of the same diseases. Arthritis may cause the dog to be less active because it becomes harder to move. Your senior dog must still get out for controlled exercise, even with arthritis. Your veterinarian can prescribe medications to make it more comfortable.

Another subject of vital importance is the dog\’s teeth and gums. Regular brushing of the teeth with a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste will go a long way to avoid health issues that start with gum disease that can cause your dog to lose its teeth. Gum disease may cause a more serious problem if bacteria enter the bloodstream through inflamed gums. Alert your veterinarian if the gums look unhealthy.

If a senior dog suddenly becomes incontinent or starts to urinate more frequently, problems with the nervous system controlling the bladder could be the cause, or it could be due to disorders of the urinary tract, prostate, or other body systems. Consult your veterinarian.

Senior dogs can be affected by heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and a canine version of Alzheimer\’s disease known as canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) that causes disorientation. The dog you love may become forgetful and confused, and it can be heartbreaking.

If your senior dog exhibits symptoms such as unusual changes in behavior, tell your veterinarian so a proper assessment can be done. Symptoms of CDS will not show up during a routine physical exam. Diagnosis of CDS can only be made after physical reasons for such changes have been ruled out. This devastating, progressive disease causes behavioral changes that disrupt the lives of dogs and of the people who cherish their companionship.

Veterinary treatment, plus love and patience, can give a senior dog extra quality time and a fuller, happier life. There is no cure for CDS, but drug treatment can provide a better quality of life and slow the progression of symptoms.

If you notice your senior dog exhibits health issues such as disorientation, unresponsiveness, uncontrolled urination, increased water intake, frequent urination, breathing problems, coughing, fatigue, tumors, lumps, eye changes, stiff or lame movement, especially after naps, or bad breath, please contact your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can properly address the health issues affecting your loved senior dog.

We have existed as a company since 1985, but it was a love of dogs, the dogs that have been a part of our life, and the passing of one dog in particular, Rusty, that inspired the creation of http://www.CalloftheDog.com and http://www.CalloftheDogShop.com — created to provide the things your dogs and pets need. Visit us for great information and quality dog supplies! Be sure to see our About Us page as well.

The two sites are dedicated to the dogs we have loved so deeply, and who have given us so much love in return. Purebreds and mixed breeds, but mostly rescues in need of a home. We educated them, but each one has had something to teach us in exchange.

Dog Training - Breaking the Chewing Habit

            Tag: Dog Health

A positive outcome needs to be a possibility no matter what a trainer (or owner) is attempting to teach a dog to do. You aren\’t going to be able to teach a dog to balance himself on the tip of his tail. That isn\’t possible. And you aren\’t going to teach a puppy not to chew. Chewing is a necessary part of the puppy\’s development. Chewing helps a puppy cut his teeth, and chewing helps him to develop the jaw muscles that he needs. So don\’t attempt the impossible. You CAN, however, teach what is and what is not acceptable for him to chew on.

The first step is to remove all of the objects that the puppy is attempting to chew, as much as you can. You obviously can\’t disassemble the dining room table. But you can put your shoes into the closet and close the door. The next thing that you need to do is to provide the puppy with acceptable chew-on things like chew toys or rawhide bones. When the puppy chews on a \”right,\” thing, give him lots of praise. Tell him how wonderful he is. When the puppy chews on a \”wrong\” thing, stop the chewing and firmly say \”No,\” then hand him an acceptable chew object. It won\’t take long for him to be able to distinguish between the acceptable and the unacceptable.

Most puppies simply outgrow their need to chew on anything and everything in the same way a human baby outgrows the need to put everything into their mouth. But all dogs do not just \”outgrow\” the need or the desire to chew. If you have a dog that continues to chew long after his puppy need to chew has been fulfilled, the best thing to do is simply to provide him with acceptable chew toys and let him chew on them.

Dog training does not have to be miserable for you or for your dog, believe it or not it can actually be a great deal of fun for you both. Learning how to enjoy training your dog instead of dreading it can be done by doing the right amount of research and really putting in all of your best effort to work hard and to make this work. Learning how to play and have fun with your dog is very important and can take a little bit of practice also, especially if they are a little bit stubborn. The best way to accomplish this is to practice all that you can but make sure that you or your dog do not completely wear yourselves out working on all of these dog training skills. Having fun is definitely the most important part of any kind of training, there is no doubt about that. Too many people spend their time getting upset or frustrated during the training process, which totally bums the dog out, along with really making the trainer feel negative about the entire thing. It is very important to keep a positive attitude and always, no matter what, remain patient throughout all of the training courses.

Enjoying your dog and also having a great time while attempting to teach them properly is very important for you both and by watching others that are experienced with some dog training skills can really put you where you need to be with your more experienced and fun training techniques. Always remember to reward your dog because it will reinforce that what they are doing each and every time is worth getting a special treat and it will help to teach them exactly what you expect of them. They will learn because you are giving them something yummy, as well as smiling a great deal and ofcourse offering them plenty of praise each and every time. Rewarding your dog will bring the both of you much closer towards success with the skills that you have applied. Finding that thing that really makes him want to do good is really important and sticking with it each and every time will give him that constant praise and reassurance that he surely does want from you, his owner.

Dog training can feel a little bit overwhelming at first for many individuals but just stay calm and stick to your guns and it will soon pay off. There should never be any problems when trying to locate more information regarding all types of training so that you can find something that works best for you and your dog. This will be an amazing experience for you and your dog and it will also be a true bonding experience for you both, so make sure that you plan on enjoying this experience completely and your dog will too.

Correcting Our Dogs and Why We Do It

            Tag: Dog Health

Why do we correct our dogs? Are we trying to make the dog submissive? Do we want to tell the dog that we are unhappy with the way they are acting? Do we hope for the dog to feel ashamed or bad at what he has done or his behavior? Probably not. When all of the emotions are out of the way, like anger, disappointment, etc., we simply want our dogs to avoid things that are inappropriate. We want the dog to be calm when guests arrive, rather than jumping all over them. We want the dog to use the bathroom in the proper spot and not all over the house. These are just some of the reasons that we correct our dog.

The problem is that dogs do not learn how to avoid doing certain things. They only learn how to actually do new things. So, a dog can learn to sit still; however, he learns this from being calm. While you may think you need your dog to be inactive to settle down, you need him to be active.

The reason dogs usually end up in hot water is that they have natural instincts and tendencies. They are appropriate for a wild dog, so you shouldn\’t be surprised that your dog becomes excited because strangers have arrived or that you have come home. It\’s quite normal for your dog to get into things or tear things up when he is left home alone, or even to pull anxiously when you are walking him.

These are not bad behaviors and they don\’t mean that you have been a bad teacher. Many people who see this kind of behavior in their dogs wonder what they are doing wrong as far as teaching and training the dog. The truth is that it has nothing to do with the teaching or training usually. They are simply natural traits. The issue is within us, not the dog. Rather than trying to teach the dog not to pull on the leash, we need to teach the dog to focus on us although there are many distractions. So, we want our dog\’s full attention to be on us even though he is being exposed to many different things that, in his opinion, are worthy of notice.

Instead of telling our dogs not to jump up on visitors, we need to show them what the proper thing is to do. So, rather than trying to stop the bad behavior, we can replace that behavior with a good behavior that the dog will do instead. We can also train him to have an unfaltering focus rather than telling him to stop barking, stop wagging, etc. With this kind of focus, the dog can be commanded to settle. Through steady use of this kind of training, the dog can be conditioned to use calmness rather than hyperactivity when he wants something. Analyzing what we want our dog to accomplish, we can figure out how to train them to do certain things in order to accomplish those desired behaviors.

Boxers - The Dogs That Fall In Love With Their Owner

            Tag: Dog Health

It is said that dogs are man\’s best friend, but the Boxer breed take that to the next level: They fall in love with their owner. In fact, Boxers take just about everything to the next level. They are exuberant, joyful, animated, playful and extremely affectionate when it comes to their family. They love kids and are great dogs for families with children. They commit fully to their owners and literally fall in love with them - but it is usually a two way street. It is almost impossible to not fall in love with a Boxer, especially when he joins your family.

The boxer is a medium sized dog, with males standing at 23 to 25 inches and females standing at 21 to 23 inches tall. The body is square with a short back and powerful limbs. It is the head of the boxer, though, that is truly distinctive. Boxers have a blunt, broad muzzle that is about a third of the size of the chiseled head. Their coat is short and shiny, in varying shades of fawn and brindle. The muzzle is black, but sometimes the black can be replaced with some white. They are truly beautiful animals and their temperament makes them even more attractive.

Because boxers are highly intelligent and curious, they love to be in the middle of the things that their humans are doing. If you have a boxer, then you know well how loving and excited they can be. If you are planning to get a one, you are in for a wonderful experience. These dogs love to please the people that they love so training is rather easy although sometimes it can be a challenge to keep their attention. They can get distracted by other things that are going on around them. However, the boxer can be rather stubborn and sneaky. If your boxer knows that he is not supposed to chew on your favorite shoes, he just might get them and slip under the bed to hide while he enjoys his chew.

Boxers are very communicative. They use verbal communication as well as other tactics like pawing to get attention. They are very creative when it comes to communicating with their humans. They may paw at you, use their paws to flip their food dish when they are hungry and even bring you their leash when they want to go outside! Boxers are great problem solvers and are very alert to their surrounds so they are often able to make connections that allow them to better communicate their wants and needs to their humans. They are often very playful and even cat like when they are trying to communicate. They are always loving and loyal.

If you are looking for a dog that will absolutely fall in love with you and your family, the a boxer is the way to go. Your boxer will become not only your best friend, but also a very important, much loved part of your family. They will protect your family, acting as a guard, while providing fun antics and entertainment for your family. Most of all, though, they will give you lots and lots of love.
