US Employers Declare War on Smokers

There has been much hoopla made about the 20-foot smoke-free zone going into effect around Arizona businesses. Putting health risks aside and the resultant costs associated with inflated insurance costs, the average smoker is at best 90 percent as efficient as their non-smoking counterparts. In addition to coffee breaks and lunch periods, the average smoker will take an extra four smoke breaks every working day.

Employers are saying Enough! Already paying for 8 hours for 7.5 hours pay, employers are no longer willing to pay almost one extra hour to feed their employees habit. The new law now pushes all employers in the direction of those who have truly created a smoke-free work place.

But what of those valuable employees who are also smokers? At an average hourly wage approaching 17 dollars per hour, employers are paying their smoking employees over $3,000 each year to smoke. This is precisely why so many local employers have opted to subsidize their employees efforts to quit smoking.

A Guide to Nicotine Withdrawal Products

Smoking may just start off as a bad habit but it can soon become an addiction. Each cigarette contains Nicotine which is the addictive part. Once you are addicted you start to enjoy the feeling smoking gives you, making it harder to stop as your body begins to crave the next nicotine fix. Any treatment to stop smoking is useful but you will still need willpower to quit, as most products will not break the habit of smoking but will help with the urge.

Nicotine withdrawal products give your body the nicotine it is craving, but without all the other chemicals contained in tobacco that damage your health. Throughout the course they then help to slowly reduce your dependence on nicotine and will double your chances of successfully giving up smoking. There are many different options of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) available from a pharmacy without prescription.

Nicotine patches contain nicotine and come in different strengths. They are like oversized plasters that you apply to your skin daily. They are generally applied on waking and removed before you go to sleep, so you get about 16 hours worth of slow absorption. Nicotine lozenges contain nicotine polacrilex and come in the form of a hard sweet. Each lozenge acts as a dose and needs to dissolve in the mouth over about 30 minutes. Take a lozenge when you feel the urge to smoke but never exceed the maximum dose as stated on the product. The nicotine is delivered to your brain within minutes, as opposed to the patch which takes hours. One of the drawbacks with this style of NRT is that your mouth and gums can get quite sore.

Nicotine hand gel is a topical gel designed to replace cigarettes. It contains an extract of Nicotiana spp and is an invisible and odourless gel that can be used anywhere. Just dispense the gel into the palm of your hand and rub it in. Once absorbed your cigarette craving can be satisfied in about a minute.

Nicotine nasal sprays contain nicotine and deliver an instant relief for nicotine cravings. Just spray into one nostril to counteract the withdrawal symptoms of giving up smoking. Particularly useful for heavy smokers due to its rapid absorption into the body.

Nicotine tablets containing nicotine act as a replacement for your nicotine craving. Easy to use, each tablet is taken orally (according to the directions on the packet) before dissolving and gradually being absorbed into the body over a period of time.

Nicotine capsules are designed to help relieve some of the withdrawal symptoms you may experience when giving up smoking. They contain no nicotine but a combination of Quinine, Camphor, Eucalyptus and Menthyl valerate which reduce irritability and reduce cravings. It has been proven to be very effective with the initial withdrawal symptoms.

Smoking Statistics - Are You One Of 440,000 That Will Die From Smoking This Year?

Smoking as a cause of death

Smoking causes the deaths of 440,000 people a year in the USA out of a total of 2.4 million deaths a year. By 2020 the World Health organization expects 10 million people a year to die from smoking throughout the world. Although smoking is declining in many developed countries, it\’s on the increase in many developing countries.

Smoking and cancer

It is estimated that in the USA, 87% of cases of lung cancer are due to smoking. Men who smoke are increasing their chances of dying from the disease by 22 times. Smoking is the cause behind 30% of the deaths due to cancer in the USA.

Smoking and heart attack

Studies from the UK show that smokers in their 30\’s and 40\’s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than their non-smoking peers.

Passive smoking statistics

Passive smoking is the inhaling of smoke from the cigarettes that other people are smoking. This could occur at work, in the home or during leisure at bars, cafes etc. In the USA, it\’s believed that 3,000 people die every year from lung cancer due to passive smoking.

In the UK, more than 17,000 children under the age of 5 are admitted to hospital due to the effects of passive smoking, every year. Studies have shown that children from homes where both parents smoke, there is an increased risk of them developing a disease of the respiratory system. At a time when asthma rates in children are on the rise, this should be a serious concern.

Non-smokers who are exposed to cigarette smoke in the home are at a 25% increased risk of developing heart disease or lung cancer.

Can drugs help?

Here are the statistics from one of the newest drugs that can help you stop smoking. The product is called Chantix (Champix in the UK) and is based on the active ingredient varenicline. In a 12-week study, 44% of smokers that were receiving the product were able to quit. This compared to only 18% that were receiving a placebo, and 30 % that were receiving Zyban (bupropion). These results are fairly impressive but it does mean that more than half the subjects in the study failed to quit smoking.

Finding an Easy Way To Quit Smoking - Some Options

An effective and easy way to quit smoking might seem too good to be true. Well, no way of quitting is a piece of cake. There are plans and techniques that you can follow that will make it less of a mountain to struggle over, though.

The first thing you have to do is to identify the reasons why you smoke. Learn to recognize the triggers. Do you smoke when you are angry? When you are nervous? Is there any particular food that you associate cigarettes with? Do you have friends who smoke? Once you identify your triggers, you will know what to avoid and this is the first step in the easy way to quit smoking.

The second thing you need to do is find somebody who will quit with you. Misery does love company. You will have cravings, and what you need the most is somebody who is going through the same experience. You can know that the other person understands what you are going through, and you will have the responsibility of helping your friend through the experience, as well. This is a very useful psychological tool in the easy way to quit smoking. Being part of a support group also helps big way.

What They Don\’t Tell You About Quitting

After being a smoker for close to 20 years, my last cigarette was smoked on August 2nd of this year. I didn\’t go cold turkey (I lack will power) … I used patches. It\’s been over 3 months now and I haven\’t felt the perks of quitting. My doctor did tell me, due to smoking as much as I did for as long as I did, it could take up to a year to notice changes. Not long after quitting I had a bought of feeling like I couldn\’t breath. Several nights I couldn\’t sleep due to waking up gasping for air every couple of minutes. Then my heart just felt like it was racing or pounding out of my chest! Then I went to the ER when I had the breathing trouble and palpitations together. After a lot of testing I found out my heart, thyroid, and lungs are apparently fine. So what\’s wrong with me? I\’m happy to say I haven\’t had the shortness of breath symptoms for about a month now and I don\’t feel the palpitations quite as often. But this wasn\’t the end of my health problem mysteries.

We are a little over 9 weeks into the school year and my 2 children have passed sickness back and forth about 4 times now. Normally I don\’t catch what they have… until this year! I\’ve been down about 2 out of the 4 times and now am battling a brutal sinus infection! It\’s not a case of self pitty BUT… anyone who has recently tried to quit smoking and succeeded will ask… WHY AM I FEELING SO HORRID??? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?? I\’ve also had the acne of a 14 year old for over a month now. Not to mention greasy hair and a really flaky scalp. And depression (i thought I was literally going crazy at one point in time), and fatigue and who knows what all else!

This morning, as my nasal glob was being hacked from my throat, all I could taste was cigarette. Well now, this is very strange! So, I started thinking could this all be linked to me quitting smoking? I couldn\’t really be feeling lousy because I started to do something good for my body.. could I? I hopped online and ran a search about this. I found an article from a lady who went through many of the same things I did. I was so relieved to find out I\’m not crazy! Apparently turning your body back into a normal one can be a very difficult process. There were a lot of other people who posted letters to her article who also went through bad health stages. The good news is most of them said it does get better if you wait it out. THEN you get to enjoy the perks of quitting.

I wanted to write this article because this is what they don\’t tell you about quitting smoking! By they, I mean the countless amount of articles, ads, doctors, organizations and even ex smokers who tell you \”the effects of quitting now\”. They, however, don\’t give you all the effects. It would have been much easier to cope and a lot less scary had someone just told me this type of thing COULD happen to me. Not everyone WILL experience awful health problems after quitting. Yet there are enough people that it happens to. Enough people that this should be made known to the people who want to quit. Prepare them for this! I was actually starting to think about starting smoking again just to see if I would feel any better. Until I found that article and that people who haven\’t smoked in years said they had these problems too but, they went away in time. I feel so much more ready to deal with everything now that I know I\’m not alone. Now that I know I\’m not falling apart. Now that I know it\’s just my body\’s way of getting back to healthy. My head and face feel like they\’re in a vice right now but, knowing that it\’s only temporary makes it a lot easier to live with. I don\’t know what exactly causes these ill effects other than your body changing and pushing out toxins and just working really hard to repair itself. I just hope by writing this I can help someone else realize they are NOT crazy or alone and that yes, it takes a lot more time than \”they\” tell us to start feeling really well. You may have to even feel really unwell first.

Why You Should Stop Smoking

When you decide to stop smoking, you will undoubtedly reap some health benefits from quitting. To end the habit successfully, one of the most helpful things you can do for yourself is to make a list of the reasons for quitting.

Then, when the craving for a cigarette hits, you can take your list out and look at your reasons for quitting. Oftentimes, the list of benefits will override your urge to smoke.

First of all, deciding to stop smoking will improve your overall health. Oftentimes, you can reverse the bad health effects that cigarettes have had on your body when you decide to stop smoking and actually do it.

Your heart will work better, your nose and taste buds will work better, and you will even have increased endurance and stamina. Your lungs will even be able to breathe better which will make you feel better all around.

Ex-smokers often find that their sense of taste and smell returns, not realizing that for many years, both senses were dulled and affected by cigarette smoking. There\’s also a point where ex-smokers realize that smoking smells awful and leaves their clothing with a lingering odor.

Many smokers who quit discover that they sleep better or generally have a better feeling, as if they\’d suddenly found a boost of strength or energy they didn\’t have before.
