Allergies - The Cause For Bad Breath

Dry Mouth- The Main Culprit

The most common reason for bad breath is dry mouth. That can cause bacteria, which are mostly found on the tongue, to build up. Usually, there is a clear relationship between the number of bacteria and how strong the bad breath is. This is because bacteria will emit a foul smelling gas as they feed on the food remains.

There are many factors that result in dry mouth. One common factor is allergies. People who have allergies tend to experience dryness in their mouth. This is not help by the fact that some medications for their allergies can dry the mouth even more which causes the odor in the mouth to smell worse. Different experts have highlighted the fact that anti allergy medicine might also have an impact on saliva production. Such medicine usually causes your saliva to reduce. With a dryer mouth, less oxygen is present and because the bacteria are anaerobic, they thrive in such living conditions.

Post Nasal Drip

Post-nasal drip (PND) is another common cause. This occurs when excessive mucus is produced by the sinuses. The excess mucus accumulates in the throat or back of the nose. It can be caused by rhinitis, sinusitis, or laryngopharyngeal acid reflux. It can be enhanced or sometimes even caused by allergies, whether in spring, fall or early summer.

People who suffer from allergies will usually have an opened soft palate and this is perfect for bacteria to multiply. Mucus is actually an area where a lot of bacteria can be found and post nasal drips are very good grounds for bad breath development. Bacteria that can feed off this condition and will also create waste products that will add to the bad breath.
