Acid Reflux Disease Symptoms
These are due to a condition in which the contents of the stomach back up or regurgitate back into the esophagus after as they become liquids. This is known as reflux. Damage can be done to the esophagus at times due to inflammation. The liquid that refluxes often contains acid and pepsin. Pepsin is the enzyme that initializes digestion. Acid reflux, also known as GERD (Gastro esophageal reflux disease), can be uncomfortable and very painful.
The symptoms of acid reflux are not to be taken lightly. The more you learn about them the better equipped you are to manage them effectively. GERD also has some really dire complications. The advantages of knowing the enemy are great.
The uncomplicated symptoms of acid reflux disease:
Heartburn- Heartburn is often a burning sensation that radiates from the middle of the chest. The cause is the nerves being stimulated in the esophagus and its lining. The sensation can be up into the neck. Heartburn can be very similar to the feeling of a heart attack. The manifestations are very much alike. The discomfort can be very sharp and painful. Pressure will potentially felt in the neck and may radiate into the back. Acid reflux is mostly experienced after meals so it is only natural that heartburn follows the same pattern. Lying down most likely will exacerbate the symptoms because gravity will not help moderate the reflux and acid will not remain in the stomach.
Regurgitation- If liquid refluxes into the throat this is known as regurgitation. Most of the time it will only be a small quantity of liquid and it doesnt escape the lower esophagus. Sometimes this regurgitation contains food. This can reflux into the upper esophagus and can be felt and tasted in the back of the mouth. This is very acidy tasting and will almost always be accompanied by a sour look. When regurgitation gets into the mouth there is potential for damage to tooth enamel and future dental problems or disease.
Nausea- Nausea while not as common as the other two symptoms of acid reflux it is just as real when it occurs. When a sufferer of acid reflux does experience nausea it will come back and can be frequent and severe and will include vomiting. Whenever someone experiences inexplicable nausea, acid reflux is one the first conditions or diseases that is assumed.
These are the three most familiar symptoms for acid reflux without complications. There are a multitude of additional symptoms that can accompany acid reflux with complications. Complications may include ulcers, pneumonia, infections of the sinus, Barretts Esophagus, inflammation of the effected areas, strictures, coughs and asthma.
