Help for single parents is a necessity in today\’s society. In 2000, the US Census Bureau of Household and Family Statistics reported that single parents accounted for 27% of family households with children under 18-years of age. And one out of two children will live in a single parent family at some point during their childhood.

It is noteworthy, therefore, to address the unique family and social needs of divorced and single parents.

Quality Family Time

The daily routine in most broken family households can be hectic. The majority of single parents work outside the home.

Aside from the need to re-establish some sort of normal daily routine to help children regain their footing, a child\’s social needs and quality family time are also important.

Because one parent now must strive to fill a two parent role at least during weekdays, spare time is precious. Creative ways to enjoy family fun and quality time together are a must.

Having children help with Saturday chores and errands, for instance, can be fun. It can also provide opportunity for positive reinforcement of family unity and working together to accomplish tasks.

The sweet reward of a family picnic, watching a family movie while eating pizza, or another type of family fun is the perfect topper.

Helping the Insecure Child

Split households often affect children negatively; at least in the beginning. One good way to help an insecure child better adjust to the new family structure is to allow them to talk about their feelings.

Getting up early Sunday morning, for instance, and having breakfast together at the table provides an excellent opportunity for family talks. Turn the telephone off to reduce the risk of interruptions; omit television and other distractions. Each family member in turn should be encouraged to share what is on their mind.

Sprinkling praise with correction can help increase a child\’s self-esteem, which will help them feel less insecure; mix 2 parts praise with 1 part correction. For instance, (praise) \”I really like the way you\’ve been keeping your room picked up,\” (correction) \”Could you please try to keep your coat and boots in the closet where they belong,\” (praise) \”Thank you, I really appreciate your help.\”

Single Parent Social Needs

Despite the fact you have your child\’s emotional and social needs to take into consideration, you also have your own. Juggling job and family without the help of a spouse can be taxing. By reserving time for yourself each week you reduce the risk of \”burn out.\”

You also benefit your children by being happier and less stressed.

The tips below can help:

1. Accept the fact that there will be times when things are less-than-perfect. As a single parent you cannot \”do it all,\” no matter how hard you try.

2. Don\’t feel guilty about seeking to fulfill your social needs. It is healthy for you and your children to enjoy alone time, and cultivate friendships outside the family.

3. Allow time for yourself each week; treat yourself to a movie with friends, go out on a date, have your nails done, or enjoy a bubble bath.

4. Benefit from contact with others who understand the challenges of being a single parent first hand. Join a local single parents group; or an online resource that connects single parents, for friendship or dating purposes.

Lastly, single parent dating calls for wisdom. Go slow; avoid persons who would make a poor role model for your children. Avoid introducing a date to your children prematurely. Allow yourself adequate time to get to know the person first.

Respect and honor yourself as a single parent. And above all else, respect your children\’s feelings; help them to always feel they are an important part of your life.

After you bury your husband, for a long long time, maybe longer, you will feel like crap. But later than sooner, you will be okay. You will get through. Here are 7 essential tips to guide you:

1. Comb your hair, brush your teeth, and for goodness sakes, take out the trash. If there are two things that will make you feel worse, it is a bad hair day and a parade of creepy crawly things marching across your kitchen floor.

2. Drink water. No, you will not feel hungry. And, it is okay to skip a meal, or two, or three. But, drink water. Keep hydrated. It is important to keep your kidneys flush.

3. Got children? Feed them. Do not forget! Force yourself. Even if it is cold cereal and milk for supper, it is okay. And for Heavens sake, sit with them, and put on a happy face when you do. Remember, they are grieving, too.

4. Feed kitty. Walk doggy. And, yes. Empty the cat box! Need I say more?

5. Pay your utility bill. Pay your rent/mortgage, before you go to bed and turn out the light. Your other bills can wait. And, gracious, if there is a problem with paying future bills, contact the lender, the keeper of the fire, and explain the chain of events leading up to your telephone call. Assure them you will not forget. Do not be surprised how helpful people will become as soon as you tell them what is going on.

6. Take a nap. For crying out loud, worrying and burying a man is a lot of stress. It will tax your energy even on a good day. So be sure to schedule a time. Then lay down, lady, take a load off your feet, get some rest.

7. Got paper? Got pen? Next time you dash out the door for that quart of milk and bag of kitty litter, pick up a cheap spiral notebook and fast writing pen. These are for your thoughts, and the list of items you need to remember to do. Helping your brain wrap itself around what has happened in your life will get you through the grief process. Because, lump it or like it, after the death of a spouse, life goes on.

Online dating photos are important, but you know that already. You know that a profile with a photo gets opened 8x more than one without. You know that an email with a photo attached gets read first.

There\’s no question about those things anymore, that\’s old news. What I really want you to understand is the power of having a GREAT photo.

Everyone has photos these days, but fortunately, most people still use bad photos. A bad photo can make you look terrible, no matter how hot you are in real life. A great photo will attract people, no matter what you look like.

Amongst the adventures I\’ve had in life, one of them was working as a professional photographer. I now shoot only for sport, but am happy to be able to share with you some rules of having a great photo for online dating.

Rule 1: Be well lit

A well lit face jumps out of the picture, a face in shadows hides from the viewer. Believe it or not, this has a huge different on how people interpret your character. If you post a photo of yourself taken in a dark basement without using a flash, you\’ll come across as a low energy/low value person. If you are well lit and bright, you\’ll come across as high energy/high value (read: FUN) person. No one looks good when they are so underexposed you can\’t even see their eyes.

TIP: Use a photo taken outside with natural light, but force your camera flash on (called fill flash) so that it fills out any shadows on your face made by the sun.

Rule 2: Use a real camera

A common trend I see in younger online daters is self portraits taken with cell phone cameras in front of bathroom mirrors, and \”at my computer\” shots taken with web cams. There are two problems. One is that these settings usually aren\’t well lit. The other is that cell phone cameras and web cams produce terrible picture quality. They are grainy noisy pictures that in general make you look bad. To someone who reads between the lines, they make you look too cheap to get a real camera.

TIP: If you don\’t own a real digital camera, you have a friend that does. Tell them you need some photos, most people are happy to play amateur photographer with their toys.

Rule 3: Pay attention to the background

People look at everything in your photo, not just you. If your house is a mess, it reflects poorly on you. Women especially notice details, so pay attention guys. If you\’ve got a couple empty bottles of vodka in the background, it looks like you party too much. If there are other people in your photo, who they are is going to reflect on you. For women, this means that you might want to reconsider posting photos with your scantily clad girlfriends. For guys, you might want to reconsider posting photos of you and any girl who looks like a girlfriend.

TIP: Since people read into every detail in your photo, you can increase your value by using a photo taken somewhere interesting or cultural. Photos in museums make you look cultured, photos in exotic locations make you look adventurous.

Rule 4: Dress well!

This rule is hugely overlooked. You are judged by your appearance and that includes your clothes. Plus the fact that the right clothes can make someone look considerably more attractive, while improperly fitting or poorly matched clothes will make you look worse. Remember, keep some congruency with who you are. If you never ever wear a suit in real life, you might not want to represent yourself as a suit wearing guy. Girls, if you don\’t want guys to think you are promiscuous and easy, don\’t post party photos of you wearing revealing clothes.

TIP: Dress to impress. You basically can\’t overdress (within good taste) and the better dressed you are, the higher value you will appear.

Rule 5: Eye Contact

Regardless of the setting, one thing you must be doing in your picture is making eye contact with the viewer. If you are getting your picture taken specifically for online dating, look directly into the camera lens every time (unless for artistic reasons the photo absolutely demands otherwise). You\’ve heard this before and it\’s definitely clich, but… your eyes are a window into your soul… even over the internet. People need to make that connection with you in order to be attracted to you. When they can\’t see your eyes, there will be a level of intimacy lacking in your picture, and that is something that is crucial for building attraction.

TIP: Make sure your eyes are visible and not in the shadows. See Rule 1.

TIP: Take off the sunglasses for your photos. You aren\’t Bono or Jennifer Lopez and as much as you believe it does, it doesn\’t make you look cool or famous. At best it blocks that critical eye connection, at worst it makes you look insecure.

Rule 6: Smile!

The human smile is one of the greatest communicative tools we have. It conveys our intentions, our sincerity, and our passion. It is absolutely key whether you are looking to make new friends or lovers. So why do I scan through so many pages of online dating profiles, and see so few smiles? Maybe it\’s because we think we look so cool, so dangerous, when we give our best badass pose. That\’s my excuse anyway…

However, when someone sees you scowling, frowning or pouting, the don\’t think \”wow, he\’s cool!\” They think \”ugh, he looks miserable.\” Someone who has nothing to smile about isn\’t a person most people want to date! So smile! Let people see how fun and friendly you are! You will be surprised at how quickly and deeply people will become attracted to someone who is smiling and sharing their joy… even through a photo.

TIP: A sincere smile is hard to fake for a camera, and people subconsciously can tell the difference. Instead, when you get your picture taken, try to laugh for the camera. Get whoever is taking it to tell a dirty joke or otherwise get you to crack up. When the photo is taken, it will freeze a moment of you displaying a great, wide, sincere smile.

Rule 7: Include Your Photos

Despite how common it is, we are all still a little afraid of being recognized internet dating, and thus we never want to send our photos out first. But the people who let their photos be seen by all get the best responses. When you don\’t send a photo the only thing you get is ignored! One of the most common things people write in their profiles is \”no pic, no reply,\” and yet they haven\’t even posted a photo of themselves first!

You are going to have to get over this if you are serious about meeting people. Really, what\’s the worst that can happen? If someone is emailing you, they are looking for the same thing you are, and aren\’t likely in a position to talk about it to anyone themselves!

TIP: Why just send one photo? If you have several (make sure they have been shrunk down to manageable file sizes) then send them! The more photos someone has to look at, the better image they will have in their head of you and your life, and that\’s a good thing!

Rule 8: Hire A Photographer

This isn\’t a rule, but consider it a very strong suggestion.

If you are serious about meeting people online, nothing beats hiring a professional photographer. A good photographer can make you look thinner, sexier, classically handsome and friendlier, just with the right lighting and right pose

If you can\’t afford a professional (and arguably you don\’t need a high end portrait photographer for this) look for a serious amateur or photography student who is looking for practice. It may cost you a quarter of what a professional will charge, or they may do it for free, simply for the experience and the addition to their portfolio. Make sure you tell them what you want it for. If you explain that you need an interesting photo that will stand out over the competition, or a sexy headshot that will grab people\’s attention, they will most likely jump at the challenge. Before you choose one, get a look at their portfolio or previous work to see if it is inline with a style that suits you.

TIP: Great places to find serious amateur or student photographers cheap:

-Craigslist, under the Services - Creative category, or by placing an ad

-Ask at the local camera store, see if they have a message board

-Email the photography department of the local college

-Find a local camera club on the internet

And that brings us to our conclusion. With those rules in mind, go through all your current online dating photos and toss the ones that break the rules. You may find yourself starting from scratch, but the effort you put into it will pay off for years to come… or until you meet that dream girl.

My youngest son was eleven when his father died. For the longest time he would cling to me when we were parting company, giving hugs and more hugs. I know this was his way of working through the loss of his father and I knew that eventually this phase would pass. Many times he would talk about things he and his father and brothers had done and this too seemed to help him move through his grief. There were times he just didn\’t want to talk to me about anything, but usually this was rare. I remember picking up his wallet one day and inside he had some old driver\’s licenses that had belonged to his father. He also kept his father\’s old bright orange work shirts and wore those for the longest time. One of them said, \”I survived the blizzard of 1993.\” This was particularly humorous since my son was born in 1992.

We would often talk about different funny things that had happened throughout the years. Like the time my husband and my kids were home and my husband drove the kid\’s 4×4 up onto our deck and the plastic lawn chairs were flying everywhere. He cautioned them \”not to tell Mom,\” since he knew I\’d probably not be too happy. A friend spilled the beans months after my husband was no longer with us and reminiscing about this event brought a laugh from all of us.

Another time we talked about was a day in late February, when it was bitter cold and ice and snow lay on the ground. My husband and kids and I went down the street to help two elderly neighbors. Their car was stuck on ice with them inside the vehicle. My husband had a stomach tube in place, which at times could be troublesome, but he started shoveling snow with the rest of us and helped dig out the neighbor\’s car. When the elderly lady was able to get out of her car, she exclaimed over him doing all that shoveling, since she knew he was ill. He just smiled at her and then we all laughed when she told him to come up to the house and she would give him a neck rub.

When my husband passed away three months later, that elderly lady passed away the next day. Her daughter reminded us of the day my husband shoveled out the car, and said that they were in heaven together and her mother was giving my husband neck rubs.

After my husband\’s memorial service, my sister-in-law went upstairs to the second floor of the funeral home to retrieve the urn with my husband\’s ashes, since he had been cremated. I still remember watching her come down the long steep stairs with the urn held carefully in her hands. About a month later my sister-in-law called me to tell me about a dream she had had. In the dream, she was coming once again down those stairs with the urn, and my husband was saying to her, \”Don\’t drop me.\” We laughed so hard when she told this dream. It was exactly the smart-alecky thing my husband would have said.

When I look back on our life together, there are many memories that are told and retold, and to me it seems further evidence of healing for myself and my children. The memories are there and fondly told, with a smile and reminiscent grin, without the pain that was once associated thinking of a loved one no longer there.

Teeth Implants Are Not A New Phenomenon

In 1931, while digging the sites of the Mayan civilization, archeologists came across a mandible fragment dating back to 600 AD. The mandible was believed to be that of a 20-year-old woman. It consisted of three pieces of shell in the shape of teeth, fitted in the sockets of her jaw where three lower incisor teeth were missing.

At first, it was considered that these shells were fitted after the death of the woman, which was a practice of ancient Egyptians. But, in the year 1970, Professor Amadeo Bobbio, who was at the Brazilian dental academic, examined the mandible carefully and conducted a series of radiography on it. He observed a dense formation of bone around two of the teeth implants. This led to the conclusion that the shells were implanted when the woman was alive. Thus, it was a clear case of teeth implant.

The Amazing Trait Of Titanium

It was in 1952 that an orthopedic surgeon of Sweden, P I Brnemark, took up the study of Cambridge University designed chamber of titanium for rabbit ears. After many months of intensive study, he found that it was almost impossible to remove the titanium chambers from the rabbit ears. Titanium had been perfectly integrated into the femur bone of the ears. The Swedish surgeon conducted a series of experiments to have a deeper insight into the amazing property of titanium. He carried out trials on animals as well as humans and, at last, confirmed the use of titanium in teeth implants.

Since the introduction of the reality show The Pick up Artist, it seems that more men are dedicating themselves to becoming Pick Up Artist than ever before. This particular reality show has thrust the PUA community into the forefront of pop culture and dictated a New Golden Rule for Aspiring Pick Up Artist. Ignoring this rule can put an end to any routine from the start.

Just a few years ago, the Pick Up community truly was a secret society. Then, VH1 turned things into a reality show. Many newbies became so excited to try what they had seen on television that they didn\’t obey the New Golden Rule for Aspiring Pick Up Artist: Be original. This sounds like a no brainer, but it is amazing how many stories I hear of newbies getting busted when trying to use openers they have heard on television. The problem is that women watch the show too.

The good news is that women have mostly watched the show for entertainment, just like they would any other reality show. Women are not engaged in trying to learn from the show in the way that men are. If an aspiring PUA can get started with a good original opener, everything else will work out fine (if he has followed up the show with solid PUA training).

Learning to be a PUA can be a positive and life changing experience, but you should avoid jumping into to the fire before you have had time to develop original openers. Never start out by using something you have heard on television. Chances are, the target has heard it too. Besides, the best openers usually happen on the fly anyway.

The VH1 reality show The Pick Up Artist is a great introduction to the Venusian arts, but following the New Golden Rule, being original, should never be overlooked.

How many times did I try to quit smoking before I actually did? I don\’t know, but I\’m sure it was hundreds of times! A couple of times I was able to quit for 1 - 3 months at a time, but I always started smoking again, sometimes for no apparent reason. The last time, my husband and I were up to three months without smoking when my brother-in-law decided to move back here from another state, and, of course, he stayed with us. He drives me mad, and he smokes 3 - 4 packs of cigarettes a day, so between nearly going crazy and being around the cigarettes, my husband and I started smoking again.

I\’m not blaming him that I smoked; that was my choice. I told you about this to illustrate that quitting smoking truly is a matter of will and resolve. You will either smoke, or you won\’t; it\’s as simple as that.

You may think that\’s cold and unsympathetic, but I\’ve quit smoking, and it\’s not a walk in the park, so don\’t expect sunshine and roses from me. It\’s an addiction that\’s as hard, if not harder, to kick as heroin or alcohol, and is more readily available and less expensive than either. It\’s a triple addiction in that your body craves nicotine, your brain and psyche are addicted to the calming effect of the nicotine, and smoking is a coping strategy. Smoking tobacco immediately delivers the nicotine to your bloodstream for instant gratification, so the cravings stop with that first puff; and the first thing a smoker does when faced with a crisis or any kind of stress is to light up. In fact, a friend once told me that her car won\’t start until she\’s lit a cigarette!

Quitting smoking is a matter of will, but it can be done, and support from family and friends certainly doesn\’t hurt. It helps to quit on a \”buddy system\” where you and one or more persons in your home resolve to quit smoking. It gives each of you extra support and strength to stick with nicotine abstinence. Make a list of the benefits of quitting smoking. For instance, in the first year of not smoking, my husband and I saved $6,000! I\’m not exaggerating! Between us, we smoked at least 5 packs of cigarettes a day. True, most people don\’t smoke that much, and the cost of a carton or pack of cigarettes varies from state to state and city to city, but even if you smoke just one pack of cigarettes a day, at $3.50 a pack, quitting will save you at least $1,100 a year! That\’s a nice chunk of change!

There are enormous health benefits too! Breathing and circulation improve, you sleep better, you have more energy, your risks of cancer and emphysema are reduced, your immune system works better and helps you resist colds, flu and bronchitis. And there you go, saving money again, on reduced medical bills, and lost time at work! I don\’t know if everyone else experiences this or not, but after a couple of weeks of not smoking, our love life-well, let\’s just say there\’s a lot more to it since we quit smoking.

If you need help quitting, it\’s readily available in patches, gum, prescription aids, or through the American Cancer Society and other support groups. It\’s not really easy to quit smoking, but you can do it.

So now you\’re a little more educated. You know the benefits of quitting smoking. But knowing the benefits of quitting smoking is rarely enough to get people to quit. They need help. There really is no escape from possible interracial relationships, what with the increasing number of immigrants everywhere in the world. The United States has welcomed immigrants from practically anywhere. As a result, it has unconsciously allowed and made way for the meeting and pairing up of a man and a woman belonging to different races.

One of the more pressing issues faced by an interracial couple is the differences in culture in which they grew up in. A couple may have grown up within the same neighborhood, but the ideals and values of their parents, grandparents, and the people who move about their social circle may still greatly vary.

Most Asian women are raised to be conservative and reserved while Latin American women are raised to be strong and outspoken. Asian men, belonging to a largely patriarchal society, are raised to exhibit stronger physical and mental qualities than women. If, for example, an Asian man and a Latina woman are united in marriage, much debate over which party gets to dominate will surely arise.

Another pressing issue is the immediate and extended family one belongs to. It cannot be expected that each member of the family will welcome the idea of having a brother-in-law or a daughter-in-law that belongs to a different race. It is argued that marrying someone from a different race illustrates a complete disregard of the values and ideals to which their race subscribes to. Also, some believe that interracial couples will be faced with the hardships of raising children with ambiguous cultural identities. While one parent enforces practices and beliefs of his or her own race, the other may actually continue to oppose it. This may lead to the children\’s confusion as to which they truly belong to.

We can only sit back and witness whether or not and how interracial love relationships will win the social battle against all the issues cited against it. Will it ever be able to prove that love is blind? At the end of the day, love truly does conquer all. More than racial and color divide lies interesting and lovable characteristics in everybody that are appreciated by others in the same or in different cultures. More than physical characteristics lay intangible qualities that may be attractive to just about anyone.

Love does not have to be a harmonious dance between physically distinguishable features, but rather a beautiful passion-filled dance brought about by a couple\’s sexual, mental, and emotional chemistry.
